Astor Piazzolla occupies a central position in the history of Tango. In the early forties, during one of this music’s peak eras, he started his professional apprenticeship at a very young age playing the bandoneon and making arrangements with renowned orchestras (Aníbal Troilo), and soon afterwards as a conductor and composer.
The force of his talent manifested itself very early, and towards the end of the forties decade his style was clearly distinguishable from everyone else’s. He was always conscious of the past – which he knew like few did – as being live material projecting itself on the present and not as a museum of habits and customs.
Sexeteto Canyengue has dedicated this creator a CD comprising a vast incursion into at least 30 years of creative labour. The young Amsterdam-based group chose his history starting from an assimilation process of the style of another creator and orchestra conductor: Osvaldo Pugliese, himself a son of one of Tango’s most fertile creative traditions as was Julio de Caro’s sextet in the twenties, which Pugliese joined as a pianist.
The primary interest of this record is, in my opinion, confronting traditions within the universe of the Tango: rereading creatively and without false modesty the work of one of modernity’s most representative composers, bringing out the most profound – and therefore least visible – ties of the well-known Piazzolla with his inexorable Tango tradition.
Gustavo Beytelmann
(Gustavo Beytelmann (1945), pianist, composer and arranger, accompanied Astor Piazzolla as a pianist towards the late seventies. He was a member of the Trio Mosalini/Beytelmann/Caratini and other groups, and currently works as a teacher and composer inFrance)
