Met dit album wil ik 30 opwindende tangojaren vieren met mijn mede-musici en met u, mijn toehoorders. Drie decennia lang reisden wij over de hele wereld, van Buenos Aires tot Novosibirsk en van Chicago tot Jakarta. Wij deelden onze muziek met talloze mensen, wat een hartverwarmende ervaring! Ik wil alle muzikanten bedanken, die mij op deze lange reis hebben vergezeld en met wie ik dit fantastische avontuur heb beleefd.
Tot op de dag van vandaag voel ik een immense liefde en enthousiasme voor muziek, sinds het verbazingwekkende moment dat ik als achtjarig jongetje werd getroffen door haar magie en begon met piano spelen.
Als erfgenaam van de muzikale rijkdom van Astor Piazzolla en Osvaldo Pugliese, de grote tango maestro’s met wie ik in het verleden mocht samenwerken, ben ik altijd geïnteresseerd geweest in het spelen, arrangeren en componeren van zowel concertmuziek als dansrepertoire. Na mijn optreden tijdens de huwelijksceremonie van onze koning en koningin werd onze groep Sexteto Canyengue bekend als het Carel Kraayenhof Ensemble. Onze oorspronkelijke bezetting – met mede-oprichter Leo Vervelde – van twee bandoneons, twee violen, piano en bas veranderde in de loop der jaren via een bezetting van één bandoneon, twee violen, gitaar, bas en percussie in de huidige samenstelling.
Dit album is ook een mijlpaal voor mij als componist. Sinds mijn eerst tango ‘Clavel rojo’ (1989) heb ik altijd een sterke drang gevoeld om nieuwe muziek te creëren geïnspireerd door mijn ontmoetingen met grote musici als Ennio Morricone, Sting, Yo-Yo Ma, Janine Jansen, Joshua Bell en het Sexteto Major. Nu is ons nieuwe kindje geboren! Deze cd bevat negen nooit eerder opgenomen composities van mij. Ik hoop dat onze muziek uw hart zal raken en kan bijdragen aan een ‘shared humanity’.
